Non-nominative (major) Subjects and Case Stacking in Korean*
نویسنده
چکیده
Non-nominative Subject Constructions (NNSCs, hereafter) in Korean have been investigated from a variety of perspectives (Gerdts & Youn 1988, 1999; Youn 1990, 1998; Y-J Kim 1990; KS Hong 1991; Yoon 1996, inter alia). Not surprisingly, the constructions exhibit a number of properties that are found across a wide spectrum of languages that have been claimed to possess NNSCs. In particular, most properties of NNSCs in Korean closely parallel those in Japanese (Shibatani 1999; Ura 1999).

On Korean “ Case Stacking ” : The varied functions of the particles ka and lul ∗
Korean exhibits a phenomenon that has been dubbed case stacking, in which the “nominative” particle ka is optionally suffixed to the subject in addition to the dative particle eykey. Numerous authors have claimed that “stacked” ka represents the realization of structural nominative case assigned to subject position, independent of inherent dative case. Under this view, ka-stacking provides prim...
متن کاملSuccessive-cyclic case assignment: Korean nominative-nominative case-stacking
In recent literature, a debate has arisen between two theories of the calculation and realization of morphological case. The more commonly held theory, the Agree model, states that all Case-features on nominals are valued by nearby functional heads. Given a designated case-assigning functional head F0 and a nominal α that is c-commanded by F0, the case-marking associated with F0 will be assigne...
متن کاملSmall Clauses and Default Case
This paper compares secondary predication constructions such as small clause complements, resultatives, and depictives in English and Korean. It argues that these two typologically different languages employ different modes of satisfying the Case Filter with regard to the Case of the subjects of small clauses. More specifically, it is argued that the subject of a small clause in English is Accu...
متن کاملA Syntactic Account of the Properties of Bare Nominals in Discourse
Case markers in Korean are omissible in colloquial speech. Previous discourse studies of Caseless bare NPs in Korean show that the information structure of zero Nominative not only differs from that of overt Nominative but it also differs from that of zero Accusative in many respects. This paper aims to provide a basis for these semantic/pragmatic properties of Caseless NPs through the syntacti...
متن کاملStacking ” and the Structural / Inherent Case Distinction
It seems to be cross-linguistically fairly common for morphology added to DPs that are already inflected for Case to interact in different ways with structural and inherent case morphology. Such morphology is often required to replace structural case morphemes, while DPs with inherent case either cannot receive the morphology at all or simply add it on top of the existing inherent case morpheme...
